    Hi..I ran into this problem myself. I was using the DecoArt DuraClear Gloss Varnish, however. Do you think the Mod Podge works better? And if so, which type of Mod Podge do you use? I see there are many different ones with different colored labels and I am confused. Thank you so much.

    You can use sharpie and clear coat. You just have to do a thinner layer of the spray paint. Wait a couple minutes between each time spraying and it won't bleed.

    • @ILovePaintedRocks

      It really depends how thick your paint is to start and how much you smooth it or not. If you find it ridged when you don’t want it to be, try wetting your fingers and tapping or smoothing the ridges down.

    I used black Sharpie to detail a rock. I used Art Deco Triple Thick sealer, two costs. After it dried, I used the same spray sealer you did here, hoping for extra shine and protection. I gave the rock to my Mother. It sat inside her family room, where it received indirect light from a window, for about year. The sharpe, has faded quite a bit. :( I wondered how other people's rocks aged.

    • @ILovePaintedRocks
      @ILovePaintedRocks 3 роки тому

      Sharpies definitely aren’t formulated to hold up to anything as powerful as the sun. For something like this I would probably go over it with a Posca pen and then spray seal it.

    Have you, or anyone else here, ever used spray modge podge? I have a memorial rock I am doing and it is not a flat surface, very bumpy. I was painting it by hand with brushes but have come to the conclusion for smaller details, given the surface I needed to use a marker and all I had was sharpies. Spray modge podge looks much easier but I can not find any videos about it. I plan on using an acrylic sealer after the modge podge. I have a lot oh hours into this rock and do not want it to run and waste all my hard work. Thank You for the video, very informative.

    • @ILovePaintedRocks
      @ILovePaintedRocks 3 роки тому

      Hi, Terri. I’m so sorry to be replying late as I am guessing it may be too late for this specific project. I have used Spray Mod Podge but I have not used it as a protective coat in this way. Spray Mod Podge is more durable than regular Mod Podge but the layers are thinner so I suspect it will work but I would do 3-4 coats. Alternatively a fine point Posch pen might also work well for your purposes without needing to risk melting by sealer. Did you end up finishing your rock? I’d love to hear what you ended up doing.

    • @BnC556
      @BnC556 2 роки тому

      Just spray thin layers. If you don't spray too heavy and thick you won't have any problems

  • @ilenevarner1299
    @ilenevarner1299 4 роки тому

    Unfortunately, I had a problem with the Sharpie ink bleeding when I applied the Modge Podge, in an effort to prevent it from bleeding. 😢 I'm not sure what went wrong? 🤷

    • @jeant1441
      @jeant1441 3 роки тому

      Dab it on carefully. The other trick is to spray really light coats at least a foot away. I've painted lots of rocks with sharpies and rarely use mod podge now bc I spray the first coat of sealant lightly and far away. Works great!

    Can I just use the Sharpie without sealing it, I am not going to put it outside

    • @ILovePaintedRocks
      @ILovePaintedRocks 3 роки тому

      Sorry for the late reply - yes. You could always use a sharpie without sealing it. The ink in a sharpie will likely fade over time but at a much slower rate if it is kept inside.

    Thanks for your tutorial and comparison for decorations rocks with sharpies! I plan to follow your two coats experiment! I also LOVE your hair! Not at all a decorating rock question, but what did you use to dye your dark hair? My hair is like yours and I’d love to have it purple!

    • @ILovePaintedRocks
      @ILovePaintedRocks 3 роки тому

      Sorry for the late response! I had the bottom part of my hair lightened in a salon and then I use dye from IroIro (this one amzn.to/3y0IfFo). As it fades, I apply the dye to my whole head and it helps blend the brown part that is growing in with the brighter purple at the bottom.
